Background of the Study
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a severe mental health condition that can develop in individuals who have experienced or witnessed traumatic events, such as violence, conflict, or natural disasters (WHO, 2024). In conflict-prone regions such as Zamfara State, where communities have been affected by armed attacks, displacement, and loss of loved ones, PTSD is a significant yet often overlooked public health concern (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2023).
Many conflict survivors in Zamfara lack knowledge about PTSD, leading to underreporting, misdiagnosis, and inadequate treatment. Cultural perceptions and stigma surrounding mental health disorders further prevent affected individuals from seeking professional help, leaving many to suffer in silence (Okafor & Musa, 2023). PTSD education programs aim to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and provide coping strategies to survivors, but their effectiveness in conflict-affected communities remains under-researched.
This study seeks to investigate the level of PTSD education among conflict survivors in Zamfara State and assess its impact on their ability to recognize symptoms and seek appropriate mental health support. The research aims to provide insights into improving PTSD education and intervention programs for conflict survivors.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the high incidence of trauma in Zamfara State due to ongoing conflicts, there is little awareness or understanding of PTSD among affected populations. Many conflict survivors exhibit symptoms such as anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional numbness but do not seek treatment due to stigma, lack of mental health services, or limited knowledge of PTSD (Okafor & Musa, 2023).
Without proper education and intervention, untreated PTSD can have long-term consequences on survivors' mental and physical health, as well as their ability to reintegrate into society. PTSD education programs have been introduced in some conflict-affected areas, but their impact on survivors' awareness and willingness to seek help remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PTSD education programs in Zamfara State and identify barriers to mental health care among conflict survivors.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of PTSD awareness among conflict survivors in Zamfara State.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of PTSD education programs in promoting mental health awareness and coping strategies.
3. To identify barriers to seeking PTSD treatment and propose recommendations for improving mental health support in conflict-affected communities.
Research Questions
1. How aware are conflict survivors in Zamfara State of PTSD and its symptoms?
2. How effective are PTSD education programs in improving knowledge and reducing stigma among conflict survivors?
3. What factors hinder conflict survivors from seeking professional mental health care for PTSD?
Research Hypotheses
1. PTSD awareness is low among conflict survivors in Zamfara State.
2. PTSD education programs significantly improve knowledge and help-seeking behavior among affected individuals.
3. Stigma and lack of mental health services are major barriers to PTSD treatment in conflict-affected communities.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on conflict survivors in Zamfara State, assessing their knowledge of PTSD and the effectiveness of education programs in improving mental health awareness. Limitations may include difficulty in accessing trauma survivors due to security concerns and the potential reluctance of respondents to discuss personal experiences with PTSD.
